Semmelweis University is the first medical school in Hungarian history and the only medical university located in the capital city of Budapest. Founded in 1769 by Archduke Maria Theresa of Austria and Queen of Hungary, it is one of the oldest and most advanced medical schools in European history. The university has a history of 250 years and represents Hungary's highest medical status and achievements in the international medical field. In 1969, it was renamed Semmelweis University in memory of its renowned obstetrician Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis (1818-1865). Dr. Semmelweis was known for his discovery of puerperal fever and the introduction of ammonia washing techniques, which greatly reduced the number of deaths caused by puerperal fever and earned him the nickname "Mother's Savior".
